← Techstars Blog

One of the most interesting aspects of the large Techstars network is just what happens with the founders after the program ends.  Torbit is a new company founded by  Josh Fraser and Jon Fox who were the founders of different Techstars Boulder teams back in 2007.  Josh’s company EventVue shut down (and if you missed their post mortem post it is worth a read) and Jon’s company IntenseDebate was acquired by Automattic. We asked them a few questions about their new venture and what they have learned over the years.

How did you decide to cofound a company together?

We became friends while sharing office space after Techstars. We decided we wanted to do a company together if the timing ever worked out. After EventVue shut down and Jon’s golden handcuffs came off last year, we started playing with various different ideas and ultimately landed on Torbit.

What is Torbit?

Torbit is a cloud-based service that allows any website to double their speed in 5 minutes. We optimize the front-end of sites to make them load fast and use DNS provisioning so there is no hardware or software to install.  You can see it in action with your blog:

How has the early adoption been?

Great! We’ve spent most of our time getting the technology right, but we’re starting to open up to the thousands of people on our waiting list as well as working with some larger sites directly.

What is the most interesting bit of feedback your users have given you?

It’s not enough to just make a site fast, you have to show them how much faster you made it.

How long have you been working on the product and are you ahead of where you thought you would be?

We’ve been working on Torbit for 10 months and it’s been a wild ride. We’re further ahead on some goals (like partnerships) but are behind on other things (like the number of girls we have in the office).

What role did Techstars play in where you are today?

We’re incredibly grateful for everything we learned through Techstars. We still keep in touch with many of the mentors we met through Techstars and count ourselves as fortunate to be a part of the network. Techstars was the launching point for us and we wouldn’t be where we are today without the program.

What is in the future for Torbit?

We’re growing as a company (we’re hiring!) and have big ideas for what can be done with our technology. We’re really passionate about making the web faster for everyone. You can expect to see a lot more sites running on Torbit and loading faster than ever!

Thanks to Josh and Jon!
