Techstars & PwC to Launch IoT Accelerator in NYC

Techstars is excited to announce a new accelerator program with PwC focused on the IoT (Internet of Things) market. PwC is a founding partner in a consortium of companies for the Techstars IoT Accelerator. The program will bring industry leaders in the new IoT market together with the most innovative emerging startups in the industry for our three month, mentorship-driven  accelerator program.

The Techstars IoT program will take place in New York in 2016, and applications will open later this year.  Application deadlines, program dates and additional information will be released soon.

By 2020, an estimated 50 billion devices around the globe will be connected to the Internet – the majority of which will be sensors, actuators, and newly invented intelligent devices that monitor, control, analyze, and optimize our world.  Products ranging from connected consumer devices to industrial solutions will be candidates for this program.  Estimates of potential economic impact by 2020 range from $2 trillion to more than $14 trillion.

Whether it’s a BrewBot to make your next batch of craft beer, a motion sensor from Notion, or baby monitoring with Owlet, Techstars has a successful history of nurturing and supporting the fundraising of IoT companies.

Techstars is following the successful model that has been proven with Techstars Mobility, driven by Detroit, to engage multiple partners in the Techstars IoT program. We are excited that PwC has chosen to lead the way as a founding partner.

For partners who would like to participate or founders who would like more information before applications open, contact iot@techstars.com.

Announcing Our Diversity Commitment as Part of White House Demo Day

Today we are excited to announce our Diversity Commitment as part of White House Demo Day.

The topic of diversity (or lack thereof) is a hot one in our industry. We know the numbers are not good across the board and we all need to step up to make them better. Techstars wants to improve opportunities for women and underrepresented minorities throughout our global ecosystem and open the door to entrepreneurs everywhere.  We know that these founders not only bring a diverse perspective and a wealth of innovative ideas — but according to recent research — companies with female founders often outperform their male peers.

To advance inclusive entrepreneurship, Techstars commits to:

  • Double the number of women in our accelerator program applicant pool and across our mentor network over four years.
  • Track participation in our programs by underrepresented minorities and double that from the baseline over the same time period.
  • Publish our diversity data annually.
  • Train staff on ‘unconscious bias’ and ensure that every selection committee includes at least two women so that female founders are represented in the selection process.

Through our continued partnership with the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), Techstars will set aggressive goals for internal change as a key player in NCWIT’s national entrepreneurship strategy. We will offer access, membership, and resources to the 600+ companies in our portfolio and to the 200 companies we add annually. Additionally, we will offer mentorship opportunities between our Managing Directors and our extensive network of founders to the technical women in the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Community.

We are proud of our partnership with NCWIT and look forward to doing great things together. We are also excited to expand on the work done by our Rising Stars program to open the door for female and minority founders everywhere.

To learn more about the Techstars partnership with the Obama administration to advance inclusive entrepreneurship, check out the White House Fact Sheet. I’ll be there today to represent Techstars as part of the announcement.

If you’d like to learn more, the White House will be tweeting live from the event today at 3:45 p.m. ET from the @WhiteHouse and @WhiteHouseOSTP handles using the hashtag #WHDemoDay.

The event will also be live streamed at www.whitehouse.gov/live.

We are excited to be a part of it!

Techstars Coming to Kansas City

Techstars is coming to Kansas City!

The very first Techstars class of the Sprint Accelerator will present their companies next Thursday, June 12, at the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts in Kansas City. These ten innovative mobile health companies moved from all over the US and even as far away as Brisbane, Australia to join Techstars and Sprint in the heart of the country, right here in Kansas City.

Joining the ten mobile health companies on stage will be three of the four co-founders of Techstars – David Cohen, David Brown and Brad Feld. David Cohen is the CEO of Techstars and David Brown is the President of Techstars; both are active mentors of the Sprint Accelerator program. Brad Feld is co-founder of the Foundry Group and author of several books including Startup Communities, Venture Deals and Do More Faster, co-authored with Cohen.

The Kansas City startup community is no stranger to Brad Feld since he purchased his house in the Kansas City Startup Village (KCSV) last year. Referred to as the Feld House, Brad offers his three-bedroom home to entrepreneurs free of charge. KCSV has become a thriving community for startups in Kansas City, with 24 startups currently running companies out of this neighborhood. I guess you could say that Brad Feld knows how to help build a startup community!

Please join us at demo day June 12 at the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts in Kansas City. Hear presentations from ten of the newest companies leading the mobile health revolution, meet the teams, and do your part to help support a startup community in Kansas City that would make Brad Feld proud.
