The Startup Weekend flag has officially been planted in the lovely city-by-the-sea that’s Barcelona. Having just wrapped last Sunday, Startup Weekend Barcelona has now laid the foundation for further growth in the Iberian Peninsula with special participation by organizers Ellas 2.0, the Spanish equivalent of Women 2.0, who lay the groundwork for female tech entrepreneurs.
On Friday, October 22, 66 participants pitched 20 ideas that more or less withstood the rigors of the panel judges and the ensuing all-night hackfest. Come Sunday the seven strongest teams vied for the championship. There was a new spin on this particular Startup Weekend however, since Ellas 2.0 wanted to motivate female entrepreneurship. A special guest from San Francisco even graced the proceedings. Isabel Arcones was tapped by Ellas 2.0 to consult with the teams. Arcones is the founder of Inveready First Capital and SpainNexus and had special insight to impart for startups wanting to grow beyond the Spanish-speaking market.
The seven finalists (sorry, no links yet) who presented on Sunday were:
- Buy Vakili – Online store for recycled designer products.
- Coupies – A geo-local coupon platform.
- Kantox – International currency marketplace mediator
- It’s Happy – Provides vertical wish lists.
- Cirkana – A mobile travel guide.
- Tripku – A social travel network.
- Shift-o-rama – Allows online shift scheduling via social media.
The grand champion was Shift-o-rama, while accolades for best team and most innovative startup went to Kantox and Tripku, respectively.
The success of Startup Weekend Barcelona has reinvigorated Ellas 2.0 to continue working towards future growth in other Spanish cities.
