The Emergence of a New Industry Around Entrepreneurship by Marc Nager
Last weekend, CEO Marc Nager guest-blogged for the Huffington Post on entrepreneurship as a global movement. Marc wrote about the need for support within local communities, including leaders and consolidation of related activities and resources. The Most Overlooked Element of your Startup: The Brand by Mike Mates
Mike Mates, our Creative Director at Startup Weekend, highlighted the four pillars of branding for a startup. While many startups do not have the capacity for a complex brand strategy, Mates recommends they take the time to build out their foundation, values, personality and expression. From Homeless to CEO, Is It All a Con? by Kyle Kesterson
Freakn’Genius CEO Kyle Kesterson shared the story of his road to entrepreneurship in the Huffington Post. Kesterson wondered if he was a fraud because he grew up differently than most of his peers at school, switched schools 14 times and often quit or dropped out. Eventually Kesterson left college early and took on several creative jobs before he found Startup Weekend. Turned out he had found his place and went on to create Freakn’Genius. Our Core Team will be heading out to SXSW Interactive from March 8th-17th. This week, we announced our abbreviated NEXT Special Edition for ten startups at SXSW. Startups were invited to submit a 15-second video explaining why they should attend the 4-day version of our 5-week international program. Click here to read more about the workshop.
Before SXSW comes SXSW Education (March 4th-7th) and our film screening! Last year, we launched Startup Weekend Education, our newest vertical that takes a closer look at solving long-existing problems within the education system. We are excited to premiere the film, which was shot at Startup Weekend Education in New York last year.
Please join us on March 5th at 3:15pm at the Alamo Crafthouse Cinema; The Ritz 2 for a screening and Q&A with our COO Adam Steele and filmmaker Vinny Verma.
Startup Weekend will be at Launch Festival from March 4-7 in San Francisco. We’re excited to see the different startups and what everyone can do!
Google Tour in Mountain View:
Google is hosting a Startup Field Trip for Startup Weekend! The Startup Field Trips are a great opportunity for startups to meet with Googlers and other startups, and learn about Google Developer Technologies. The agenda will include an hour of technical lightning talks, followed by breakout sessions with the speakers.
Spaces are limited, you must RSVP by filling out the form below to attend. All visitors must arrive at 468 Ellis St., Mountain View, CA 94043 by 2:45pm on March 7th to get badged in. Hosts will meet you at the building entrance.
Here’s what we have planned for you:
2:45pm – Get badged in and go to event room
3:00pm – Lightning Tech Talks (Topics may include: YouTube API, Maps API, App Engine, Android / Play Store, Google Drive, Google+, Chrome, Dart, Commerce, Google TV)
4:00pm – Break / Snacks
4:10pm – Breakout sessions with speakers
5:00pm – Self-guided tour of campus (maps will be provided) / Go home!
