Today’s web, Tomorrow’s IoT : Techstars Startupweekend Paris Iot 2019
12 years ago, a very simple concept was born, we take a weekend and release a 54h event where participants starts from a 1min pitch idea and take the challenge of bringing out an entire experience of living the life of a startup. That is Startupweekend and this is the story of small edition happening in Paris around IoT Theme.
Transition from internet to the internet of everything
Statistics (Source : globalData) says that the global internet of things market reached 130 Billion dollars in 2018 and will reach 318 Billion dollars in 2013. Today devices such as Goole Home or Amazon Echo allow you do things that you could’nt image 20 years ago like vocally asking directions, ask weather and that’s crazy ! [Yesterday science fiction is hppenning today]
The transition from immaterial to materia has already reached, its is a silent change without. The question is what is really IoT ? IoT is concept difficult to describe because it’s not a recent concept. Should we consider the use of mobile phones as IoT ?
“The world don’t need gadgets, it needs sustainable solutions for the problems we are facing. There is a lot IoT project these last years but only a few really succeed. You may have surpassed all technological boundaries, the only thins that matters is to ANSWER THE NEEDS AND DEMANDS. That’s the main difference between invention and innovation. You reach innovation when you succeed into bringing your product into the market, that should be only main focus of Startupweekend projet.” Startupweekend Paris Iot Coach
Organizing an IoT Themed Startupweekend
Following the Startupweekend Paris & Lyon IoT in 2018, here we are in 2019. Organizing a startupweekend is not one of the simpliest thing in the word, a year before the core team started to decide do make the event and to plan dates. Few months later, recruitements for orther organizers start, this prospection is maily focused on people that already know the concept, anf four months before the website and the ticketing opens. IMPORTANT : Experience proves that people who never participated have difficulties bringing and organizing the Startupweekend Experience regarding the major differences between this kind of event and other kinds.
The organizing team was formerd by gathering former participant passionate around the theme, most of the organisers came joined Startupweeend at different editions : Refugees, Iot, Maker, Madagascar, Digital …
“What is wonderful with organizing a startupweekend is that is edition is a whole new experience. Lead organizer, press relations, community manager, logo designer, food organizer, sponsors relationship and as many roles as many edition. Changing role at each Startupweekend unveil a new vision.” Startupweekend IoT organizer
Startupweekend experience teached most of us a key thind organizing workshops prior to the event such as :
- How to pitch a project in 1 minute at BeNext
- Prototyping an IoT device in 54h at SigFox
- Bootcamp : presenting former participants at BeNext
The following workshop happens during the weekend :
- A very short design workshop held by Iqili to help participants create their visual identity

Startupweekend Paris : Madagascar Edition 2018
Startup Weekend Paris Madagascar Edition
The next edition of Startupweekend Paris Madagascar Edition will take place October 12th-14th at Sensepace, Paris. This edition, like all the four previous edition is organised by volunteers from Juniors Pour Madagascar (JPM) and from the Malagasy diaspora. Juniors Pour Madagascar is an non-profit association that aims at fostering the emergence of a new generation of entrepreneurs FOR MADAGASCAR. The Venue : Sensespace
The choice of the venue was not trivial since Sensespace is a workspace, event and experimental platform located in the middle of Paris (Bastille) dedicated to social innovation. Senspace have coworking space that hosts about 20 positive impact startups and MakeSense, a worldwide community composed of passionate social entrepreneurs. This sounded like a perfect place for organizing the Startupweekend Paris Madagascar Edition and bring a huge social impact to develop Madagascar.
“Passion, listening, humility, hard work, relaxed state of mind, the new generation of entrepreneurs for Madagascar, it’s YOU!”
Supporting startups for Madagascar : Support

“You want to start a project ? You want to test an idea ? You are looking for team members ? you have nothing on schedule the weekend ? Global Startupweekend Antananarivo is your best opportunity 🙂 No AI Skills required, no tech skills required, mentors & organizers will help non-tech participants discover AI and how to apply IA to solve the common problems in the society” Jessica – GSWAIAN Organizer
Back to Antananarivo
Five Years since the very first edition of a Startupweekend Antananarivo, SW is back in Madagascar 3th of November to 2nd of December 2018 !!! The growing Malagasy tech ecosystem, the new techologies spread rate is changing the lives of Malagasy People. Organizers believe that AI still has its place in Madagascar and entrepreneurs believe that technology can offer solutions for everyday issues..
“Despite of any fact, I believe that Madagascar still have the next AliBaba, the next Google in the Indian Ocean and Africa. We have a strong growing tech local community, bound with external diaspora and in permanent contact with worldwide groups” Fandresena, Startupweekend Fianarantsoa former participant & GSWAI Organizer
The event format will keep the same format, 54 hours from Friday to Sunday in which participants pitch ideas, vote and select favorite ideas, form teams between 3 to 7 members, start brainstorming, receive feedback from mentors, prepare a Business Model, prototype an MVP, prepare a pitch deck and present the results in front of a panel of judges. Previous local events are available here : http://communities.techstars.com/madagascar/antananarivo/startup-weekend
11 Years of Startupweekend, 5 years of Startupweekend in Antananarivo
This year was highlighted by the expansion of Startupweekend into Malagasy provinces such as Fianarantsoa, Mahajanga. The ecosystem wants to democratize entrepreneurship, especially tech entrepreneurhship, indeed a few series of events are expect to be thrown in the next years / months. Coming years will probably bring Startupweekend to Toliara, Nosy-Be, Toamasina and other cities. Startupweekend never ends …
Under a Gobal initiative around Artificial Intelligence
The global AI is an initiative, born after the first SWAI in Paris in 2016. The first edition organizer in Paris in 2017 led to a sucess and a second edition which will regroups more startupweekends around the world. Local winning teams will enter a wordlwide global contest.
“Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Autonomous car, facial recognition, neural network, multi-agent systems, object recognition, Pattern recognition, Smart predictive recommendation, Chatbots … Artificial Intelligence offers multiple domains and became more trivialized 🙂 SWAIAN purpose is to help participants to discover how they can apply AI into simple business models, any knowledge of IA is not required to participate.” Gihanne SWAIAN Organizer
This year the Startupweekend will be organized at Etech consulting, major Tech company in Madagascar. Etech consulting is also deeply implicated in the AI field around Machine learning problematics. Need good internet connexion ? No worries, everything is set to give the best experience possible.
Thanks to the Global Partners Techstars & Google for entrepreneurs. Special thanks also to all the partners that will accompany us including SmartOne (IA datasets), Axian Group with Netapsys, Vanilla Pay(ecommerce & recommandation algorithm) and other actors, Antananarivo.AI (local community gatherings), Otwoo (Facial Recognition & Chatbots). The local organizing team stays available at email@example.com, do not hesitate. KerKer 😉

Give First / Community First & Enhance Diversity
Following the success of the three previous startupweekend (two general editions, one changemakers ) in Antananarivo, a new edition for Fianarantsoa was announced in August 2017. In 2018, Malagasy startupweekend ecosystem steps forward with fresh new editions, giving the opportunity to other provinces to grow their startup communities. Startupweekend Fianarantsoa 25-27 May 2018 is here. We believe that a strong entrepreneurship ecosystem must have 3 main things : a strong community, huge diversity and various partners.
As a host of the Antananarivo 2018 Startupweekend Edition, Etech Consulting a local tech company, encourages entrepreneurship events and will host the first press conference of this new edition. It will be an occasion to discover the startupweekend concept. Often called the biggest incubator in the world startupweekend is a 54h format event with unique organization and participation rules.
“I decided to organise a startupweekend (in Fianarantsoa) because I deeply believe that there is an urgent need of sensibilization about innovation and entrepreneurship in my hometown ”
Pierre, lead-organizer of Startupweekend Fianarantsoa
This edition is an occasion for the Malagasy diaspora to participate. JPM France (Juniors pour Madagascar) supports all the Malagasy entrepreneurs around the globe, they also support this edition by allowing people from the diaspora to support local entrepreneurs by buying their ticket through the initiative JPM Parraine un participant SW and its chatbot.
A strong collaboration with various parners is a key to build an ecosystem : economic leaders, NGO, governement institutions, launched startups, SME’s and others. Major actors such as Axian group promotes the development of entrepreneurship in Africa supporting projects such as Lamakoo or Salama Care at the previous Startupweekend Paris dedicated to Madagascar. Yes, there are new startups such as Hamac or Paika who are passionnate about developping the ecosystem and Governement initiatives like the “Unité d’Incubation Entrepreneuriale et d’Emploi” and NGO that are contributing to foster innovation and entrepreneurship.
A strong presence of IOT for the following Malagasy editions
In a world becoming less virtual and more connected, IOT has its place in every startupweekend. For this startupweekend, a partnership is made between Obconnect an IOT ecosystem marketplace, Obconnect is developping a project of funding 1 million of connected devices mainly health related in Africa : ONEMILLIONIOT
Meanwhile, ODI community regoups IOT developers and IOT passionnates with activities such as ODI Kids. ODI Kid organizes coding goûters, an activity to sensibilize and encourages children to learn code and robotics. The new trend is now to use the digital to connect real world “things”, and Madagascar is on the bucket list.
“In the future, you will buy connected things like you buy a shirt or shoes, our consumption habits are already changing, and we are responsible of building this future.”
Abdoulaye Sy, founder of Obconnect – Startupweekend Fianarantsoa mentor
New upcoming challenges
Organizing a startupweekend in Fianarantsoa might be harder than in Paris. Indeed, there are less probabilities of food, electricity or internet incidents. Anyway, the more problem there are, the more opportunities there is. The main challenges that are met in Madagascar revolves around basic needs such as Health, Education, Energy, Food, Connectivity and Water access.
“Organizing a startupweekend is a challenge for all of us. We do not expect it to be easy. We decided to launch this edition just after the changemakers in the capital (Antananarivo). Why ? because we believe in CHANGE and the best place to foster it was there (Fianarantsoa) ”
Ricardo, co-founder of Otwoo and co-organizer of Startupweekend Fianarantsoa
This initative is not alone, startupweekend Mahajanga will be launched by another team in April in the warm beaches of Mahajanga and more events are expected to occur in other cities like Startupweekend Nosy-Be, Toamasina, Tuléar so keep in touch.

The following article is written in Malagasy …
Akôry aby o !!!
Faly izahay mampandreha anareo fa vonona izahay hampitondra ny firaisankina amin’ny mpandraraha manerana ny Madagasikara amin’ny alalan’ny Startup Weekend izay miverina eto Madagasikara ka ho avy ao Fianarantsoa.
Startup weekend ? Hono oa, inona no atao hoe Startup Weekend ?
Ny Startup Weekend dia fotoana iray tsy manam-paharoa mba hitsapana ny hevitrao na hitsapanao ny traikefan’ny fandraharahana. Startup Weekend dia hetsika maherin’ny 4.000 nokarakaraina tany amin’ny firenena mihisa 150 nanomboka tamin’ny taona 2009. Azo antsoina matetika hoe “incubateur” lehibe indrindra maneran-tany ny Startup Weekend! Afaka mamorona na misafidy ny ekipany ny tsirairay ary ny tanjona dia manangana orinasa ao anatin’ny 54 ora. Rehefa avy niara-niasa nandritran’ny roa andro ny mpandray anjara dia manolotra ny tetikasany eo anolohany mpitsara, mpandraharaha sy “investisseur”.
Startup Weekend dia te hizara ny filozofia hoe “No talk all action” na hoe tsy misy kabary, tsy misy resaka fa tonga dia hetsika. Raha manana hevitra ianao dia tsy voatery manam-bola amin’ny voalohany. Rehefa mahasarika mpanjifa 100 fotsiny dia azo atao ny miheritreritra fangatahana financement. Aza matahotra manomboka tetik’asa tsikelikely, tadidio fa i Nelli Studio, Hamac, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Airbnb dia nanomboka tao amin’ny garazy na efitra kely.
Mpianatra ? Mpaka sary ianao ? Developer ? BizDev? Injeniera? Mpahay siansa mpanara-maso? Mpisolovava? Mpanao hosodoko? Mpivaro-kena ? Simia? Agribusiness? … Na iza ianao na iza, dia hanana ny toeranao amin’ity hetsika ity ianao. Tsy misy fetran-taona, fahaiza-mamorona, niaviana. Na manana tetikasa ianao na tsia, raha vonona hianatra ho mpandraraha na vonona hampivoatra an i Madagasikara, dia tongava !
Fanontaniana miverina matetika :
Matahotra aho fa hisy hangalatra ny hevitro – Tsia:
– Tsy misy lanja ny hevitra iray :, maro ny olona manana hevitra mitovy aminao
– Teo anoloan’i facebook dia nisy hevitra tokana sosialy mihisa 150 izay tsy nahomby : matetika ny hevitra efa nisy nanana taloha

After a few years in standby, thanks to Google For Entrepreneurs, Techstars and the entrepreneurs community, Startupweekend is back to Antananarivo, Madagascar 🙂
For its 10th birthday, StartupWeekend comes with new and fresh design so we also want to bring fresh ideas with this new ChangeMakers edition that will take place 11th,12th,13th of August 2017 at Etech an IT company located in Antananarivo.
Madagascar, the beautiful island is sometimes known outside as a the country of “Moramora” where everything follows its own slow pace. With local potical and economical issues, the country was ranked among 7th lowest GDP (PIB) according to the IMF (International Monetary Funds).
Dear malagasy changemakers, startupers fellows, with this initiative the organizers aims at gathering alltogether all small entrepreneurs in Madagascar and bring change.
For most startupers, the real problem in Madagascar is not investors (dont forget that google, Apple, Facebook started wih a few guys and few computers). The real issue is the lack of support and help. That’s why this year, the Startup weekend wants to emphasis this by making strong partenrship with local and international startups such as Bridge For Billions or Entr’up, companies that can help startupers stay on the line and succeed.
Lets join forces and bring changes !!!!
