DOST and Metro Clark ICT to host Startup Weekend Clark

THE Department of Science and Technology, through its Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) is supporting Startup Weekend Clark to be held on November 21-23, 2014 at Clark Museum in Pampanga.

Organized by Metro Clark ICT Council in cooperation with and local developer and business groups, this will be the first staging of Startup Weekend in Angeles City, Pampanga.

Startup Weekend Clark is aimed at generating breakthrough ideas from tech communities in the Pampanga area.

Startup Weekend is a 54-hour competition where developers, designers, marketers, technopreneurs, and venture capitalists come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startup businesses.

The concept, which started in the U.S., is a global movement to empower young entrepreneurs to nurture their innovative ideas into becoming sustainable businesses.

The event gathers experts and practitioners from different fields of business to mentor the participants as they launch their concepts into business reality.

The whole event involves the participants in different stages of the business cycle including idea creation and business pitching, prototype development, mentorship and networking sessions until product or business presentation to possible investors and funders

According to Mon Ibrahim, Deputy Executive Director of DOST-ICTO, the DOST-ICTO has been moving forward in its new thrust to uplift the entrepreneurial spirit in the ICT industry, and in line with this, it is supporting Startup Weekend Clark.

“The ICTO believes that providing support in countryside entrepreneurial activities is an effective way in livening and expanding the local economy through ICT,” Ibrahim said. “Promotion of homegrown ICT products and businesses will not only provide employment in the locality but also provide innovative and creative solutions through their products and services.”

“Startups or Innovation-driven enterprises (IDE) is one way to diversity our economy.  Anyone with a laptop/computer, internet connection and a passion to build a business can build their own “startup”.   We want to encourage more startups in our city, said  Dr. Gilbert Tumibay, President of Metro Clark ICT council.  “Startup Weekend is part of our awareness campaign to introduce the benefits of tech startups to our community.”

Tina Amper, founder of, and adviser to Startup Weekend Clark said that startup success stories like and, Filipino startup, are inspiring many would-be entrepreneurs.  Startup Weekend allows these motivated individuals to experience first-hand on how to build a startup in a mentored environment.

During Startup Weekend, participants get acquainted with one another starting on a Friday night. They pitch startup concepts they are passionate about, and form teams around the most popular ideas. They refine their ideas and business plans and start building product prototypes with the help of the onsite mentors, and then present what they have accomplished in a four-minute pitch and demo by Sunday evening.

“This is a great opportunity for Pampanga and surrounding cities as we will have successful entrepreneurs and tech leaders who have volunteered to mentor the participants says Dr. Gilbert Tumibay.

All are invited and anyone interested in learning how to start a business are encouraged to attend – including students, software developers, web designers, professionals, etc.  Participants will be categorized as those with technical or non-technical background.
