Your Winners: The Greatest Hashtag Battle In History

As the final hours in Global Startup Battle close in, we thought we would get the party started early and award the prize for the top cities in our 2nd annual Hashtag Battle. We added this battle to GSB last year and what a lot of fun it has been.

In fact, let’s take a quick look back at 2013 for reference:

 Last year’s numbers (2013)

city rank

Impressive. About 3 years ago we started tracking every single event hashtag via SimplyMeasured (a great local startup that is now the leader in social analytics) and we typically see anywhere from 300-2,000 tweets on a regular weekend hashtag throughout the year, resulting in average of 3-5 million impressions.

During GSB, those averages are blown out of the water, you guys are determined! The amount of photos, stories, inspiration, encouragement, and yes, some trash talk has been amazing for our team to watch throughout these two weeks. It offers us a window into things that are happening across the world we wouldn’t otherwise have. For that, we can’t thank you all enough for being a part, we hope you enjoyed the view as well.

Winners

Now, our winners for 2014. As you may know, we’ve put up a prize for the hashtag battle for the first time. That will be a trip for 3 members of the Organizing team in the winning city to UP Summit, our annual meeting of global Community Leaders. It includes flights, as well as hotel room and most meals! We also planned to host a happy hour in the winning city for all the participants.

Unfortunately, we’re not doing that anymore.

Because we’re hosting one in EACH of the top FIVE cities instead! After seeing how hard all of you worked, we just didn’t feel right about one city getting all the goods. Every single city that participated is certainly a winner, but as a reward for their incredible participation, the Top 5 will all get a sponsored party/happy hour.

Organizers, we’ll be in touch shortly, we’re still in the midst of the contest portion of GSB still, so things are hectic, but we’ll have the details to you shortly.

Without further ado, here they are, the final Top 10. Congratulations to you all!

2014 Results

Screen Shot 2014-11-26 at 5.00.18 PM

Congratulations to Giza, Toulon, Lyon, Amman, and Lille. If you look at this year’s numbers compared to 2013, you’ll note that the winner last year would have placed just 7th!

Great Tweets

Reevaluating How Angel Investors Collaborate With Startup Communities

Written by Simon Huang.

Entrepreneurs have long known the key to startup success is collaboration. Behind every billion dollar IPO and every glitzy product launch stand years of shared ideas, partnerships and long hours bouncing ideas off neighbors in co-working spaces. No startup is an island. These lessons, however, have been slower in coming to the angel investment community.

With AngelSummit.io, the first ever convening of the country’s angel investors and community leaders, coming up in November 12-13 in Dallas, it’s important that we reevaluate how angels can collaborate – not just with each other, but with America’s vibrant startup communities.

Case in point: Upstate New York. The region boasts some of the country’s best engineering talent – produced by the likes of Cornell, the University of Rochester and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Taken with the area’s low cost of living, along with the presence of tech giants like IBM, and Upstate’s entrepreneurial potential is promising.

It could be even higher with more and better angel interaction, says Mitchell Patterson, Upstate New York native and one of its most active entrepreneurs and investors. As the Founder of Startup Weekend Syracuse and former Vice President of Armory Square Ventures, a local VC fund, Mitchell has a front-row seat watching how investors interact with Upstate ventures.

The relatively modest cost of living, Patterson claims, makes Upstate New York ideal as a kind of “runway” for the larger markets of New York City and Boston. But while plenty of companies start in the area, they often aren’t able to scale, leading them to relocate prematurely. “Companies that we can grow, when they need more capital, it isn’t there, so they move to Manhattan or Boston or San Jose. Companies often don’t end up growing here.”

Given the reputation of startup ecosystems for energizing local economies, this is an unfortunate trend. However, the arrival of more capital isn’t a cure-all either. The small size of Upstate New York and similar markets means that the methods that worked in New York City or San Jose don’t quite fit. “There are some investors who try to use what they used in previous regions,” Patterson observes, “who try to make the community fit the model rather than making their model fit the community.”

So how should an angel interested in the promise of lesser-known markets make their approach? “I don’t like to try and reinvent the wheel. I look at what someone else has done and how I can use that as a tool in my own arsenal, making modifications.” This is precisely, Patterson continues, what a convening like AngelSummit.io can offer to both the angel and entrepreneur communities. Gathering the country’s angel investors and founders can only help close the gap between vision and execution.

“One of the problems with a lot of investment initiatives over time has been that everyone wants to replicate Route 128 or Silicon Valley and culturally, these regions are all different.” Call it a cultural exchange, or one of best practice – angel investors who want to keep a finger on the pulse of the Startup Revolution will be well served to find themselves in Dallas next month.

Angel Summit: Bring More Funding To Your City

The angel investing community is undergoing a revolution, and AngelSummit.io, the first-ever national summit for angel investing, is leading the way. Plucky, enterprising entrepreneurs are attending Startup Weekends, validating business models, and setting up shop in cities far from Silicon Valley in the hopes of building the next billion-dollar company. While many founders have been quick to embrace the promise of Dallas, D.C. and Denver, capital, mentorship and their corresponding networks have been slower to follow. Entrepreneurs can make these cities into hubs for innovation, but they can’t do it alone. We need to lend a hand, but how?

StartupAngels, along with their partners at 500 Startups, the Dallas Entrepreneurship Center, and UP Global, is convening a national angel summit in Dallas, November 12-13, to explore best practices and build solutions for increasing angel activity in communities across the U.S. The summit features an amazing group of seasoned investors. Dave McClure of 500 Startups, Scott Case of Main Street Genome, Mark Kvamme of Drive Capital, Paul Singh of Disruption Corporation, and Leslie Jump of StartupAngels will be headlining a lively discussion with 150 to 200 of our peers.

What are the nuances of each potential startup hub? What works? What doesn’t? What America’s investors need is information, from local characteristics to national best-practices. At AngelSummit.io, hosted in one of America’s emerging startup scenes, our community will begin a much-needed dialogue on how to invest in and grow our startup communities across the nation. Our partners – investors, entrepreneurs, as well as corporations will be joining us in kicking off this crucial inaugural conversation.

To boost the vibrancy of this dialogue we’re offering special community pricing for 25 Startup Weekend organizers and community leaders to join us in Dallas.

Opportunity awaits. Will you be on the ground floor?

Edge of Tomorrow: Hit Reset on How You Schedule Meetings

I don’t remember when, exactly, but there I was again: trying to schedule a phone call, going back and forth and back and forth.

“Do you have 11am, 3:30pm, on Monday or 3:15pm on Tuesday open?”

Simultaneously flipping between days on my Google calendar, collecting potential times.

“…but what about these times?”

And round and round. Dejavu.

I had to blow it up.

edge-tomorrow

When looking for a tool that could help me schedule meetings efficiently and with a little style – I started by identifying my key needs:

  • The chosen solution couldn’t make scheduling time impersonal or create more work for the other party. (Working with customers and partners, I definitely wanted to make things easier for both of us.)
  • It had to sync with the major calendar services and send nicely formatted invites (Google Calendar, iCal).
  • The solution had to keep itself in sync automatically with my calendar (I use Google Calendar).
  • It had to have room to represent ‘me’ – meaning, I wanted the communications to feel personal, not like booking time with some big company or dealing with a robotic, automated interface.

I preface this knowing that there are literally thousands of tools out there for scheduling/booking – especially getting into enterprise level tools and small business appointment scheduling platforms and the like – but I’m sticking to a more personal use case for this article. Below are the applications which work for me and the way I interact with people in my day to day. I’d love to hear tools or methods you use in the comments below.

1. Calendly

My number one calendar tool right now is Calendly. I use it to let people schedule times of their choosing in times that I have available. It syncs with my Google Calendar and never shows me available for times that are already taken. The recipient can choose our meeting length and it adds the event to both our calendars.

Why I like it so much:

  • It feels personal: It has a picture of my face and a short intro. I can also customize the colors and all the event descriptions.
  • Because it will show the scheduler all my open time slots, they can easily pick a day and time that works for them instead of wasting time going back and forth over email.

2. YouCanBook.Me

A close second is a tool I used for a long time (and still do on occasion) called YouCanBook.Me. It offers a really robust set of tools and customizations vs. Calendly and is just as easy for both parties to use. I ultimately chose Calendly as my main tool because I liked guiding people to select the right amount of time a little more explicitly and my Calendly page seemed more ‘me’.

Other than that, YouCanBookMe is a fantastic tool and will let you play with far more settings than Calendly. It also plays nice with Google Calendar and iCal and keeps in sync with both automatically.

Screen Shot 2014-07-21 at 4.07.58 PM

Take a look at all the features you can have with YouCanBookMe. The free option is great, but if you want to get your whole Organization on a service like this, YouCanBookMe could be a great option.

3. Assistant.to

For a new ‘old school’ approach – try Assistant.to. If you’re worried about sending people links or them struggling with the booking tools above, this could be perfect for you. Assitant.to works right in Gmail and adds an interface to pull open times of your choosing right from your Google Calendar. It then inserts a nicely formatted list of those times for the other party to peruse right in the email! (Watch their video here)

Pro Tip

Remember to always insert these into an email in a fun or personal way. I work to make sure I don’t just ‘link drop’, but preface it with something like:

‘Here is a link to my calendar, you can book anything that works best for you’.

or

‘I hope this will make it easier for us to connect’.

I always use language that doesn’t make it seem like a requirement or that I am too lazy to give you times, but that it is a potentially easier option and that I’m flexible to schedule in other ways.

In my experience, people have been thankful for the link and some have even adopted one of these tools themselves. With the right message, you can easily position this as an exciting way to be transparent about your availability. It’s especially great for people you will talk to on many occasions over time. They love that they can always get to your calendar and find time with you.

Bonus tip: Since I use these calendar links so much, I added them to a nifty tool called Text Expander for Chrome, so I just have to type @cal (or whatever I want to define as the shortcut) and it pops the link right in for me. This is useful for all your commonly typed phrases, even credit card numbers, URLs, addresses, or for those words you can never seem to spell right.

How do you hack your day for better productivity?  I’d love to hear about the tools that make your day easier.
