Some of you may have noticed that we shifted the date of the November event to be one week later than the traditional date. Our new event date places us at the beginning of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2015.
We’re now excited to announce that by doing so, we’re able to give the Groningen entrepreneurial community an even bigger opportunity. An opportunity for you to showcase your Startups on a global scale.
Many cities around the world have hosted their Startup Weekend at the beginning or end of Global Entrepreneurship Week, making it the busiest 10 days of the year for Startup Weekend. This year, more than 250 (!) events will take place during these two weekends.
With more than two hundred and fifty cities, all hosting Startup Weekend at the same time, we’re estimating about 3500 teams will created in a period of just 10 days. With these astonishing numbers, it only makes sense to go above and beyond the usual competition and make it truly global.
Welcome to the largest startup battle ever held – Global Startup Battle 2015 – a global celebration of innovation that gives you, your idea, your team, and your city a unique chance at startup success.
GSB 2015 will consist of six different tracks:
The champions track enables the winning three teams from each city to compete to be the best startup of their region and then the regional winners compete to find the best startup on the planet.
Four of the tracks are designed for teams that do not place in the top three places.
The final track is open to any startup, anywhere in the world.
More information will be given during the event itself, but all teams should prepare to make and submit a short 90 second video, showcasing the startup, within 48 hours of the weekend finishing. We are currently working to ensure that there are facilities for you to do this at the end of Sunday, should you wish to do so.

It has been around for a while and most people in the Startup Life probably know about it: 3D printing. This phenomenon was first only used by big companies. Nowadays 3D printing has been delivered to the masses and it is starting to get a bit more affordable by the day.
Although people still might say: ‘Why would I want to buy a big bulky 3D printer?’ or ‘I might have one or two ideas to print, but it’s a waste of money only for that’. Well, someone who might say that it’s a big bulky machine doesn’t really get the sexiness behind this machine. Some of the 3D printers are esthetically quite beautiful; others are a bit more industrial. Big chance that the more industrial looking printers are home made. Fun fact is that some 3D printers are 3D printed. A bit too inception for you?
To understandand see these lovely printers in action the startup 3Dhubs has been set up and they are also here in Groningen. Since launching in August 2013, the Amsterdam-headquartered startup claims to have become the world’s largest and fastest growing network of3D printers, with over 7,000 print locations in 140 different countries. It also claims that 30,000 prints have been done over its service in the last year and that its network now allows over a billion people to access a 3D printer within 10 kilometers of their home.
On their website they announce get-together’s once in a while. Next to that you can find people who own a 3D printer and you can ask them to print something for you! You can see per person how much they charge, what their delivery time is, what colors they can print in and the recommendations they received. This is an awesome startup to solve the problem for people who do have an idea but don’t want to buy a 3D printer for themselves.
Latest news is that 3Dhubs raised 4.5 million dollars in Series Afunding in order to make their local service global!

Three years, one room
Friday evening. Groningen. The bar in Het Kasteel starts to fill up with people. Not just random people, but with former Startup Weekend Groningen attendees.
From the last three years all the attendees were invited for a reunion in former Startup Weekend venue Het Kasteel on the 20th of June. Here, everybody could catch up again with old team members, attendees, coaches, volunteers and the facilitator. While two team members welcomed the Startup Weekenders down stairs in the main entrance with a selfie challenge, others were waiting upstairs in the bar to get the party started. The atmosphere was good. Even Hennie, the owner of Het Kasteel, said it was immediately ‘gezellig’. Drinks were flowing and the chatting became louder and louder.
After a lot of catching up everybody was invited to the main room for a small program from the Startup Weekend team. Startup Weekend facilitator Nick Stevens took to the stage and welcomed all of the attendees with a small trip through memory lane, showing all the teams who participated in the past. Then the movie was shown from last years event. Two former teams, Bartune (2011) and Quoins (2013), were also invited to talk about their Startup Weekend experience and the adventures they had after Startup Weekend. It was nice to hear they are still up and running.
After the presentations the new Startup Weekend team introduced themselves and instigated a game in order to win a ticket for the next event in Groningen. Awesome. The rules were simple: everybody gets a piece of paper with half a quote on it. The objective: find the other half. The first two people who find each other, then find and high five Startup Weekend team member Jos, are the winners! Easy as pie. The start sign was given and after a lot of shouting, pushing and elbowing the winning couple got to Jos and high fived him. Congratulations, the first two attendees of Startup Weekend Groningen 2014!
Everybody settled down again and returned to the bar for some more drinks. The reunion party went on for quite some time and even ended up in the city bars. Well done. The Startup Weekend Team wants to thank everybody who made this evening possible and we hope to see you at the next event!
