Who’s in the bunker in 2011?

We’ve had a lot of people ask us who’s in the Boulder 2011 class, working away in the office space affectionately known as The Bunker. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the companies:

  • Belli Ella, changing the answer to “what am I going to wear?” for every pregnant woman, allowing ladies to rent maternity clothes online.
  • Mocavo.com, the first large-scale, free search engine for family history research.
  • A company that changes how people use energy by making it fun and social.
  • A web service that processes live data from your product and transforms it into beautiful visualizations.
  • Flextrip.com, the first company to allow travelers to receive individualized offers for things to do on vacation.
  • A company that is building tools to create interactive videos, so you can play your videos, not just watch them.
  • SocialEngine, letting you create an addictive online community that rewards your members for posting great content.
  • Rainmaker, the API that keeps your contacts current.
  • Meal Ticket, connecting consumers, restaurants, & the Food Service industry, using deals & analytics, in a brand new way.
  • A company that provides an email application platform.
  • A company that enables developers to rapidly create social games and deploy them to all popular smart phones, tablets and PCs.
  • A company that gets truant students back to class and gets more funding back to schools.

Interested in meeting them?  Join us on Friday May 20th at 7pm in the Bunker for Startup Week and Techstars HackNight.  You can also check them out, in full glory, on August 4th for Demo Day.  Watch this space for more details!

Demo Day will be held August 4th.

What can you do in 5 days?

If you follow our blogs and mantras, you know we put a incredible emphasis on execution.   Ideas aren’t worth the paper napkin they’re written on – it’s the execution of the idea that’s everything. This is true especially at Techstars, where we basically cram 3 years into 13 weeks.  You won’t survive the program if you’re not a dreamer that DOES (and maybe a doer that dreams).

Last week at Techstars for a Day in Boulder, I threw out a challenge – “What can you do in 11 days?”.  There were 11 days between Techstars for a Day, and the application deadline (which is March 16th!  Hurry!).  Can you launch your product?  Can you close a sale?  Can you significantly move the needle of your business in 11 days?

Well shockingly, you can.  And the TS4AD attendees are rocking it.  I’m thrilled with the ongoing progress the hungry teams are making – there’s no better way of getting on our radar than proving you can execute fast and furiously (and communicating it to us!).

So – there are only 5 days left until applications close in Boulder.  What can you do in 5 days?  Game on.

Boulder early application deadline is Feb 24th

The Techstars Boulder early application deadline is less than a week away – February 24th, 2011!  Applications are heating up, and we already have more applicants than we did last year.  So if you’re thinking about applying, but aren’t sure you’re going to make the early application deadline, here are a handful of reasons why you should consider getting it in early.

  • In order to be considered for Techstars for a Day, you need to get your apps in by Feb 24th.  What’s the big deal about TS4AD?  Well, David Cohen, Jason Mendelson, Paul Berberian, Howard Diamond, and other top mentors will be there.  You get an inside glimpse of what the program is like, along with the opportunity to meet us face-to-face so we can get a better sense of who you are.
  • If you’re not sure if Techstars is right for you, you can meet Techstars Alumni such as SendGridNext Big SoundEverlaterVacation Rental PartnerOrbotixKapost at TS4AD and ask their opinion.  If you don’t believe that Techstars can help your business because you’re too far along, or you’ve already raised capital, or you already have revenue – ask the teams that have gone through the program!  You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how the prototypical Techstars team has evolved into a range of companies from pre-revenue to funded and profitable.
  • I’m still fresh!  I haven’t been looking at apps for 6 straight weeks yet.  😉
  • You can edit and update your application anytime after you submit it, right up until the final deadline of March 16th.

Looking forward to seeing your application by February 24th!

Why apply early?

Techstars Boston 2011 early application deadline is in just a few days (January 13th!).  If you’re thinking of applying to Boston, or any of the Techstars programs, here are a few great reasons to apply by the early application deadline.

  • You can’t be considered for Techstars for a Day (TS4AD) unless to beat the early application deadline.
  • Five of the 11 teams in New York City attended TS4AD.  #justsayin
  • We’re not exhausted from looking at applications yet.
  • We’ll probably spend more time looking at your application.  Last year, Boulder received 25% of its applications in the last 6 hours.  With only a couple of days to get through them all, I’m sure I missed some gems because I couldn’t spend quality time on the application.
  • You can always update your application once you submit it.
  • Applying early gives your team the chance to prove it can execute.  Show us amazing progress from the time you apply to the application deadline.

What are you waiting for?  Apply now!

The Unsung Heros of Techstars

Program Associates (interns) rock.  They stack chairs, they collaborate with companies, they order food, they meet investors, they organize documents, they strategize with founders and mentors; they get a balance of the glamorous with the not-so-glamorous tasks of Techstars.  And they do it all with a smile on their face.  I couldn’t run the Boulder program without them.

Program Associates are often the unsung heros of Techstars – but I’m thrilled to see two of our interns get some pixels via the CU’s Leed’s School of Business MBA Program.  Gregg Alpert & Adam Shepler were 2 of the unsung heros of Techstars in Boulder this summer.  Check out the video featuring them (below)!  They graduate in 1 year, then watch out world…

Let’s also not forget our third program associate of the summer, Al Doan.  Not the typical intern, he’s an entrepreneur at heart but looking for experiences in the tech world.  He’s started one of the country’s largest quilting operations (yes, quilting!) and he proved to be our comic relief of the summer.  We expect great things from him too.

If you’re an MBA student in search of a real world entrepreneurship experience, consider becoming a program associate for Techstars.  It’s an immersive entrepreneurial education if there ever was one, and your personal network might explode in ways you never imagined.
