You see, as someone who helps companies and organizations figure out who they are and the best ways to tell their story to the people who will care the most, I wanted to make sure I did my adopted city proud.
What makes Wheeling, West Virginia different from the other cities that host these amazing events?
What is our unique advantage and selling point?
And, because so many of us that are invested and involved in this event are also part of the push of young entrepreneurs who are working hard to reinvent Wheeling, I had a pretty good idea of what that was.
What better group of people to help those who want to start something new, those who want to break the system, than a group of people already grinding and doing it on a daily basis in the host city?
And then, while walking along the Heritage Port one sunny afternoon, this quote from Hunter S. Thompson, one of my literary hero’s, came to mind.
“No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride … and if it occasionally gets a little heavier than what you had in mind, well … maybe chalk it off to forced conscious expansion: Tune in, freak out, get beaten.”
Entrepreneurialism offers no promises. It offers very few paths to quick riches and stardom – once in a while, but that shouldn’t be the expectation. What it does offer, as marketing guru Seth Godin so aptly tells us, is our own little piece of real estate to build exactly how we want, where we want – no excuses, nobody to blame. It’s yours.
As Thompson said, you are going to get beaten some days. Things you were sure would work will fail. You will go to bed exhausted, and wake up seemingly more exhausted than when you went to sleep. But there will be these amazing times when you look back at the road you have carved and say, “I built that.”
Startup Weekend Wheeling offers no promises, but it does offer you the chance to build something. And what’s more, unlike some of the other larger cities, you have a chance to build something, if you so choose, in a city that is open to new faces and new ideas. You have a chance to immediately have a voice. You can be plugged into a community that will support you instead of trying to squash you.
And you’ll have a million cups of coffee waiting for you on the mornings you wake up exhausted because we’ll be right there with you.
So, if you want to carve that road. If you’re a builder and a creator. Come meet with us April 24, 25, and 26th. All that’s left is to, “Buy that ticket to take the ride“.
We can’t wait to meet you.
