1. Why have you decided to support Startup Weekend?

Startup Weekend is “home” to many talented people with an entrepreneurial mind. We are happy to support both internal and external such programs that foster innovation, exchange of ideas and co-creation of tech products and startups.
It’s a path we have ourselves walked. Moving from the clean sheet of paper to the forefront of IT services and now expanding our business to include software product development has been a journey with many key lessons. Hence our decision to support Statup Weekend and other similar initiatives.

2. Tell us more about your initiative Seed For Tech. What is it and why now?

Our interest in software product development coupled with the level of business maturity we have now achieved in terms of stability, expertise, management and brand positioning are determinant factors which led us to build Seed For Tech.
Shortly, this is an investment structure through which we provide seed funding, product development and go to market support to early stage companies and founders. Basically we partner with them in building the new venture.
With Seed For Tech, we are looking forward to interact and partner with founders and programs like Startup Weekend. The effervescence and creative bravery that surround those 54 hours of pitching and coding is amazing and we definitely want to be part of it.

Telekom Romania, as Platinum Sponsor at swmures!

Telekom

Startup or not for a business to reach to the  market it needs the proper communication channel. If you sell Popsicle you’ll advertise them where children are. If you are in agriculture you’ll go to local fairs where you know your customers are. But what if you want to conquer the world with your idea? What if you want everyone to know the solution you came up with? Well, then… it’s actually even simpler: you go online. You create a social media page, a web page, a blog, content, apps, you chat with your prospects, you update your product based on their needs. You connect. You evolve.

Here at Startup Weekend Mures we feel that connecting with one another is a key to a Startup success story.  Any idea has better chances to become productive when great minds…and financial powers… come together to materialize it. Even if the idea is very specific, with a sharp research, a phone and a strong internet connection, communities can be formed!

This year, for the 3rd edition of Startup Weekend Mures we network, research, learn and achieve through a Telekom internet connection.

So, we have the connection ready! You should only bring your business idea!

7 Questions to Ask If You're a Startup Weekend Participant

Startup Weekend is, by definition, an event based on experiential education. This0318_sb_readerquestions_630x420 means that we’re more into learning by doing. However, there are some guidelines that can help you have a better understanding on the game rules.

1. What kind of ideas can I pitch at the event?

Although Startup Weekend events are focused on building (some) tech products, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be the next Mark Zuckerberg. We welcome all the creative and out of the box ideas that can be turned into businesses. But of course, any business needs at least a website, doesn’t it?

2. How do I pitch the idea, if I don’t have enough experience in presenting?

If you are not an experienced public speaker, that is not a problem. We will offer you guidelines to make sure you transmit all the necessary information when pitching. Before the demos, Startup Weekend mentors will be there to get you through pitching, marketing and design to help you put an awesome presentation together.

3. What if they steal my idea?

Out of millions and billions of ideas, we’re pretty sure that no one would actually try to steal your idea. After all, it’s the implementation that makes an idea a total hit.

4. Is this Startup Weekend for me?

According to UP, Startup Weekend attendees’ backgrounds are roughly 50% technical (developers, coders, designers) and 50% business (marketing, finance, law). From what we’ve experienced, the one thing unites all attendees is a common interest in entrepreneurship, interested in working with like-minded, motivated and skilled people to develop a product during a weekend.

5. Why do I have to pay?

The 7 meals, snack & drinks surely attract some bills. Actually, in most of the cases, the ticket doesn’t even cover the costs. But we’re lucky to have our supporting sponsors: Everseen, Telekom Romania, Save Patatoes, Casa Automata, Symme3D, Techsylvania and Mentagram.

6. What should I bring with me?

You should bring everything that fuels your work and creativity: power cord, business cards, phone, mood for work, etc. We’ll get sure that you won’t get out of coffee!

7. How do I prepare?

We advise you to do some research before coming to SWTimisoara no.4. There are a lot of resources out there that can help you polish your idea and have a better understanding of what Startup Weekend truly means. Moreover, you should also rehearse your pitch; try to make the most of those 60 seconds to conquer both the audience and determine the best tech skilled people in the room to join your team.

If your questions are not on this list, you can also watch this video on ‘Startup Weekend First Timers’ or drop us a line at timisoara@startupweekend.org.

This New Venue Will Conquer You For Good

There is this one place in Timisoara where magic happens.

No, really.

You know that feeling when you go somewhere nice, where all the nice people go and you wake up a couple of hours later, wondering if time flies?

1920312_890100884366226_8475510314241381282_n

Well, that’s Ambasada.

Reputed as the latest-cool-place-for-cool-people-in-town, Ambasada is the place where not only magic happens, but also creative and fun stuff, too.

Concerts, movies, crafting workshops, uber-productive meetings of Startup Weekend Timisoara organizers, yoga classes and many more interesting activities to get people together to spend quality time.

The co-working space upstairs for crafty & artsie people welcomes all the creative people, whether with artistic skills or not. We will be spending most of our time at Startup Weekend in this place.

Downstairs, a large space filled with coffee scent and chillout music makes room for friendly talks and leisure hangouts. The meeting room in the left is usually booked for more serious matters, such as debating on what colour your T-shirt should have at this edition.

panorama1

Many have asked us what’s with this new place after three editions hosted in the same welcoming co-working space of Timisoara Startup Hub. The truth is that we wanted to embrace the startup culture and be spontaneous in our approach. Their motto is #dream #create #enjoy: we consider that this is the proper attitude for the next Startup Weekend experience, too!

Not to mention that the staff at Ambasada is made out of friendly and open-minded people who really know how to make awesome coffee. And it’s for non-smokers, which makes it even cooler.

You don’t have to take our word. You can pay Ambasada a visit whenever you want, during the week. But one can truly feel this vibe we’ve been talking about at Timisoara Startup Weekend 4th edition.

About that One Million Dollar Idea

There was this cloudy Saturday when we thought it would be a nice idea to get out and try to have meaningful conversations with people on the streets of Timisoara. We’ve asked 12 people to imagine what it would be like to have a 1 000 000 dollars business. When we asked them about the thing that got them there, they’ve had the same answer: AN IDEA.

The most curious thing was that almost all of the people that we came across have had a business idea. It is still a mystery to us why they haven’t done anything about it. Yet.

You see, whether you have that rocket-science idea or not, you can still get to that 1 million dollars. Attending Startup Weekend can be a good start to get you in that journey.

Well, wait no more. Startup Weekend Timisoara is just around the corner!

Get to know all about Startup Weekend :)

It’s time to make the change you always needed, but never realized you wanted.

Startup Weekend Targu Mures
May 22nd, 2015

Our very own edition is getting closer and closer by the day, and to help everyone get a better idea about what we’re doing, here are some informational videos, along with what the event is all about, to introduce you to the event, the gathering, the experience, the Startup Weekend.

First of all, ideas are pitched, then they are voted, and those that won get worked on, the good thing is, you can bring a team and a great idea, so you know that your idea will have a real chance of getting somewhere.

Then the work starts, the ideas are validated, a business model is created, plans are made, and the elbow grease starts pouring.

In the end, the ideas get judged, prizes are awarded, and a party takes place. 🙂

Winning teams at third edition Startup Weekend Iasi 2015

2015-03-29 00.09.25 HDR

The third edition of Startup Weekend Iasi was held at Hall Rossini – Palas on 27-29 march 2015.
For this edition we gotten 85 participants who pitched 25 ideas and 12 teams had been created.

We had 3 prizes in the top and 4 special prizes. Each team has chosen a name, but these nicknames can or cannot be the official ones. From each team we had a short description.

1st place – SeeMe!

SeeMe! is a smartphone traceable device reassuring parents they will never lose their child (again) in an open, crowded place. Team SeeMe! includes Raluca Lucaci (Android developer), Aurelian Ursache (iOS developer), Catalin Pomirleanu (iOS developer) and Iulia Weingold (team motivator).

“Startup Weekend Iasi was an accelerated learning process for us. We came there with zero experience in terms of startups, business and management, and throughout the entire time felt like dried sponges filling up with valuable knowledge… We had no idea you can get so much done in such little time. Our sincere congrats to organizers, mentors and hard-working teams! Great job everyone 🙂 ” Iulia Weingold, team motivator @ SeeMe!

2nd placeSmartGift

Smart Gift is an app that is helping you to find a last minute memorable gift. Let’s think like this you forget about a friends birthday or it’s Valentine’s day and you need a suggestion of an awesome gift for your girlfriend/boyfriend, you go on the app put your budget, make a personal profile by check-in some tags and then select a distance in what range to find gift. After seconds lots of awesome gifts around you will come on the screen.

Gifts are bringing joy to the world, so why not to give a smart gift in order to make it memorable

„The experince at #SWIASI2015 it was intense, dramatic at some point, challenging, sent me to a rollercoster of emotions, but in the end we came second, so for sure all it paid off. I want to thank to all my team that overcome their limits by working under pressure, in order to make something big.” Mircea Serdiuc(Tzury) @CEO Smart Gifts

3rd place & Best MarketerBeerTime

Beer Time: Our idea revolves around making large groups of friends go out faster and easier. Ususally what we want to know when we go out is if there are enough available friends to go out with, along with a time and a place. Beer Time lets you define your group of friends and send them a simple question when you feel like going out: “Do you want to go out at 8, in London Pub?”. Your friends can only say yes or no. Saying yes acts like a promise, so if you get 4 positive answers, then it’s a date. This process eliminates all the negociation that takes place in a chat system and also eliminates the need for facebook or any social platform.

“What happenned at Startup Weekend was a roller coaster from start to finish. Meeting so many people devoted to becoming better at what they do in one single place is inspiring; having so many great mentors walk around the room is just such a great opportunity. I personally came to Startup Weekend to meet good people and this is exactly what happened. My team had a lot of energy, ideas and worked really hard; I am proud of them and I’m sure they are proud of me. Anyone looking for special people should consider participating in the future.”   Andrei Tudor Diaconu founder @BeerTime

Crowd Favorite – PeerWorkout

For everybody that enjoys team sports and can’t find a team or lacks motivation and needs a push, PeerWorkout is THE app that helps you locate sports buddies with similar interests in your area. We bring together people through sports and give already existing sports communities a tool to interact through in a fun and easy way. With a true understanding of our users’ needs and an adaptive platform that grows as they provide input, PeerWorkout aims to cover everything from scheduling sports get-togethers to measuring your metrics and providing you health tips to finding the coolest places and peoplwn town to work out with.  Elisa-Letitia Stefan founder @PeerWorkout

Startup spirit award – Music Land

Music Land is a music software for piano players. It will assist users to read music notation and get feedback while they are playing, using a friendly interface. The product is meant both for home use and for classrooms, too. The later versions will be extended to other instruments as well. Team Music Land includes Natalia Klus (3D artist), Alin Salaru-Placinta (Javascript developer, web designer), Eduard Iacob  (C++ developer) and Mihaela Chirnoaga (music teacher and developer).

“A competition is useful to startups in order to check how do they rank comparing to other businesses and to verify the product is viable. The time we invested in these 3 days was worth it all the way.

The most valuable resource of this particular competition was the incredible line of mentors. We didn’t expect to meet them in Iasi, at least not all at once. They re-opened roads we thought were completely shut down and gave us much more confidence to take our dream further. ” – Mihaela Chirnoaga founder @Music Land

Judges special prize – HandOut

Our original idea is to connect disabled people in need with volunteers willing to help. We plan to connect them using an online platform and a mobile app. The flow is simple: A person with a physical disability will post a message on the platform informing briefly about the need he has (“I need someone to buy me a bread – Alexandru cel Bun, Iasi, 3rd floor”). The ones that are willing to help (we call them “helping hands”) will see the request based on their location and person with a disability location. For the example given, if I am in Alexandru cel Bun and I want to help, I will see this message on my phone using the App. If I am available and willing to help, I will respond to the request by pressing a button. On the other side, the person with a disability will have a list of people willing to help and he will choose his “Helping Hand” based on a profile we provide (personal details, eventually verified by and NGO, Facebook link etc). Once the disabled person is accepting the “hand” the phone numbers will be shared and they both can communicate about the next step, in this case, bringing a bread on 3rd floor. The disabled person will pay for the bread and the “helping hand” will offer his time to bring the bread to the 3rd floor. We have tested our idea and discussed a lot with disabled people about it and at this moment we feel that we have a great responsibility to implement it because the disabled people reaction was very positive, encouraging us to finish the implementation and release this product.

“We had a wonderful team formed by 5 members, from which 3 were for the first time on SW. The experience was very interesting for both of us especially because it was the place to meet and to know that we share some common values. It did not mater that we were missing some more resources in our team: we did our best with what we had, it was funny to have backend developers doing front end stuff or have them replace words on presentation with Maps and other graphical content. On the other hand, we had the great opportunity to find mentors that were willing to offer from their “know how” with so much pleasure and enthusiasm that you were really really impressed and happy to be in the same room with them. If before the event I was not sure I have something in common with entrepreneurship, after SW I realized that I may re-consider this option for the future.” Mihaela Ciobanu founder @Hand Out

Thank you all for participating and see you next time in 2016!
