Mentor Spotlight: Roland Gabrielli

Biography
Roland Gabrielli

Roland is a doctoral student at the Institute of Space Systems of the University of Stuttgart. As a member of the Plasma Wind Tunnels and Electric Propulsion Group, he investigates Fusion and Electric Propulsion by the means of system analysis and modelling. His approach is currently being adapted for the study of more general systems encompassing Space Power Provision and Thermal Control. As a part time occupation, he works as a consultant for the small Esslingen based tech think tank and service startup Concept Evolutions. The small enterprise is dedicated to spinning off Space technology for terrestrial and green applications, and to the development of disruptive concepts. Roland has studied aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart and at the Institut Supérieur de l’Aéronautique et Espace (SupAero), Toulouse.

Mentor Spotlight: Chiara Manfletti

On behalf of the StartupWeekend Space Team, I would like to introduce you to one of our mentors, Chiara Manfletti. She will work intimately with you and your team, disseminating her knowledge and experiences, making sure you and your team will be successful.

Biography
Chiara Manfletti

Chiara currently holds multiple positions within the German Aerospace Center (DLR). She is the Project Manager for Expertise Raumfahrtsysteme (X-TRAS) task force connecting a multidisciplinary team across DLR with the aim to develop innovative new space transportation systems. She is also the Engine Transients Group Leader at Lampholdshausen. In addition to these positions, Chiara serves as a Technical Assistant for ESA’s Future Launcher Preparatory Program (FLPP) with a focus on the Ariane 6 launcher. Her technical experience encompasses laser ignition; fluid flow systems; propellant management; engine behavior, modelling design and testing; mission and trajectory analysis; and launch vehicle design. As a leader in the area of launch vehicles, she is driving the German research division to collaborate and innovate to maintain competitiveness in the commercial launch sector and to enable an exciting future in which space activities are commonplace. Chiara holds a Doctorate in Engineering from RWTH Aachen University and is currently pursuing a second PhD at the University of Stuttgart in astrophysics. She also has a Masters in Space Studies from the International Space University and a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine in London, England.

Speaker Spotlight: Christopher Stott

On behalf of the StartupWeekend Space Team, I would like to introduce you to one of our speakers, Christopher Stott.

Biography
Christopher Stott

Christopher Stott is the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of ManSat, the world’s leading orbital filing company, and originator of the SpaceIsle marketing and branding concept for the Isle of Man. He has served as the Isle of Man Government’s Honorary Representative to the Space Community since 2003. He is the current President and in coming Chair of the Society of Satellite Professionals International, the space and satellite industry’s largest professional association.
Chris brings over two decades of experience in space markets working with the Boeing Company in the Delta launch vehicle program, and Lockheed Martin in Space Operations. Prior to this, Chris worked Life Education Centers, a UN NGO, and prior to this in US and British politics at a senior level Washington DC, and Westminster.
Chris has a passion for space based STEM education and he serves on the Boards of a number of Not For Profits specifically focused in this area including the Kalpana Chawla and Ilan Ramon scholarships fund for Indian and Israeli students to attend the International Space University, where he also serves on faculty and as the former Co-Chair of the School of Management and Business, the Challenger Centers, the Conrad Foundation, and the United Space School. Chris was also a founding director of the International Institute of Space Commerce and serves on the Institute’s Board today. Chris also serves with the AMAR US Foundation.
In 2013 Chris was appointed to the Advisory Boards of both the Pacific Telecommunications Council and the National Electronics Museum.
Chris is also a published author with the Royal Astronomical Society, the Adam Smith Institute, and the International Institute of Space Commerce, where his work focuses on the economics, ethics, and regulation of space.
Educated at Millfield School in Somerset, England, Chris attended the University of Kent, Canterbury where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honors in American Studies, Politics and Government. While at Canterbury, Chris also studied at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography where he received a Diploma for his studies in International Relations and Maritime Policy. Chris holds his Masters Degree in Space Sciences from the International Space University, having graduated from the first class of ISU’s Masters program in Strasbourg in 1996.

Helene is Head of Transversal Innovation at Airbus Defence & Space where she takes care of fostering innovation within the company. Before she worked in Paris, France and Hamburg, Germany for FABERNOVEL, a French seed-investment and an innovation consulting company specialized in the digital industry. She began her carrier in Brussels, Belgium within the media sector.

Sebastian Erler

Sebastian Erler is an authorised representative of nordwest Kapital, nwk, the private equity division of Die Sparkasse Bremen. nwk seeks minority investments in unlisted small and medium-sized businesses in the growth and maturity stage and provides mezzanine capital. In his function as investment manager, he contributed to more than 40 private equity transactions in various industries, including aviation. He holds a diploma degree in business administration and engineering from University of Applied Sciences Bremen as well as an Executive MBA in Mergers & Acquistions from Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. He is furthermore a visiting lecturer at University of Applied Sciences Bremen in the field of reporting, planning and entrepreneurship.

Francis Heckman

Francis is a 34-year-old American citizen who was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany. He has been banker for more than 15 years, including 8 years as a bank manager. He is competent in business administration and banking business, as well as personnel management. Francis believes that not being trapped by strong conservatism and political frame-works are the most important endeavor of national economies to always keep at least one step ahead of the others, and to simply improve the world.

Chris Boshuizen

Chris Boshuizen is Co-Founder and CTO of Planet Labs. Prior to Planet, Chris was a Space Mission Architect at NASA Ames Research Center, where he co-created the PhoneSat Project – PhoneSat was the cheapest and fastest built spacecraft at NASA – and lead multiple partnership projects between NASA and private space exploration companies. Prior to NASA, Chris was appointed Interim executive Director of Singularity University, coordinated the founding of the University and raised over $2.5 million of initial funding from Silicon Valley sources. In 2014 Chris was awarded the Advance Global Award as Expatriate Australian of the Year. Chris received his Ph.D. in Physics and Bachelors of Science with Honours from the University of Sydney.

Weston is currently co-founder of WunderAgent, a solution for property owners, and of Jetty, an iOS app for events, as well as strategic partnership coordinator (Europe) for the Space Generation Advisory Council and long-time mentor at diverse startup accelerators in Berlin.

Christoph Brosius

As a advertising and marketing professional with experience in the TV, film and game industries, Christoph co-founded the Game Thinking agency, Die Hobrechts, in Berlin in 2011, focusing on gamification for business, governmental and non-profit clients. Since 2009 he has been working as an instructor for Agile Software Development, Project Management, Interactive Media, Game Design and Game Thinking at various public and private universities. While also consulting entrepreneurs in the creative economies on business models, product development and marketing strategies, he facilitates national and international creative workshops and conferences.

Agata is an entrepreneur, e-PR specialist, science journalist, and information broker. In her professional endeavors, she focuses primarily on innovation, knowledge management, crowdsourcing and new technologies. Since 2012, she has been associated with Black Pearls VC, where she is responsible for the brand management, and acts as an adviser for startups in branding and public relations. She is the founder and CEO of dlaodmiany.pl, an e-PR agency and company utilizing crowdsourcing in delivering IT solutions for creative industries. Currently, she is working on her PhD in business informatics, exploring crowdsourcing as a knowledge transfer tool. In her private life she is technology enthusiast, and a lifestyle and fashion fan.
