Celebrating the 10th Startup Weekend at Réunion, France

Everything went great for the 10th edition of Techstars Startup Weekend Réunion! We welcomed 120 highly motivated participants with some very inspirational projects! 47 ideas were pitched with, as usual, a huge variety of projects – from renewable energy, special pastries, food apps to a new generation of coffins! 12 projects were selected and pitched to our jury. Needless to say, they had a tough time selecting the winners.

Our first Techstars Startup Weekend took place in 2011 in St Denis, the capital of Réunion Island. Right from the off, we built a long term partnership with a local incubator which strongly promoted us, both through their media and notoriety and through financial support. We found 10 coaches who really added value to the first projects. Then we had the chance to quickly welcome successful entrepreneurs who built nice and visible startups. Thus media were attracted, together with new sponsors, including telcos, bank and local authorities. Techstars Startup Weekend events quickly became the flagship event for ‘to be’ startups in Reunion.

We also got early support from the Techstars Startup Weekend team who initially came to help us organise our first events, so it was an instant success. Now, Techstars Startup Weekend is well renowned in Réunion. Our participants get a lot of traction after the event. Students and participants mention it in their resumes and it gives them a very nice story to tell!

We always have amazing sponsors who strongly promote the event, insightful coaches, prestigious jury involving known individuals here in Réunion, we also have good prizes, we fight to get fresh news from our success stories’ startups to keep ‘light’ on them.

One advise: do what you can to have one or two success stories as quickly as possible and media, sponsors and participants will flow. This is a virtuous circle which starts with a reliable sponsor + a quick win ie a successful startup with high visibility.

We are organising two events per year which is already quite a lot of work… and fun of course! Still we have short-term plans to launch a third Techstars Startup Weekend per year, focusing on a particular vertical, probably centring around culture (art, music etc) or social impact. Las 25 reglas de oro para una reunión eficaz

Las reuniones son un mal necesario. Lamentablemente, muchas veces perdemos nuestro tiempo al tener muchas reuniones. La mayor causa es la falta de organización y priorización de nuestro tiempo y del equipo. En este artículo, te daremos 25 reglas de oro para una reunión eficaz.

Estas reglas básicas te ayudaran a tener una reunión eficaz y mejores resultados en todas tus reuniones.

¡Acuérdate de solo convocar a una reunión si realmente es necesario y no alargar las reuniones por más de una hora!

1, Checklist inicial para cada reunión

  1. Fecha y hora de la reunión.Listado - Reunión eficaz
  2. Ubicación de la reunión.
  3. Objetivos de la reunión:
    • Dar información
    • Motivar
    • Resolver conflictos
    • Buscar soluciones
    • Tomar decisiones
  4. Nombre de participantes o miembros del equipo.

Esto es lo mínimo que necesitas saber antes de organizar una reunión. También utiliza la regla de Las 2 Pizzas de Jeff Bezos:

“Si no puedes alimentar a un grupo con dos pizzas, probablemente el grupo es demasiado grande.”

Toma en cuenta que una reunión eficaz requiere del equipo necesario para que fluya la comunicación entre todos.

2, Antes de la reunión

Si tú eres la persona que está organizando la reunión, asegúrate de prepárate antes de llegar a hablar con tu equipo. No hay peor error que llegar a una reunión sin una agenda, rumbo o persona que lidere el proceso. Toma control de la reunión y asegúrate de seguir tu agenda.

Esto ayudara a que no pierdas el tiempo de tu equipo.

  1. La reunión tiene que tener objetivos definidos.
  2. Los participantes a asistir a la reunión han sido identificados.
  3. El horario de la reunión ha sido definido.
  4. La ubicación de la reunión ha sido establecida.
  5. Has creado una agenda para la reunión.
  6. Todo material necesario antes de la reunión ha sido enviado a los participantes.
  7. El lugar de reunión ha sido reservado, preparado y listo.

3, Durante la reunión

Sigue la agenda que hayas establecido. A menos de que surja un tema más importante donde tengas que tomar una decisión, trata de no desviarte con discusiones que no tengan que ver con los temas pre-establecidos en tu agenda.

El seguir tu agenda te ayudará a enfocar tu tiempo y esfuerzo para lograr tomar decisiones con tu equipo. Toma nota de todo lo que se decida durante las discusiones y puntos principales que se hayan establecido. Estas notas te ayudaran a resumir la reunión y priorizar los siguientes pasos.

  1. ¡La reunión empieza a TIEMPO!
  2. La agenda es revisada con el equipo.
  3. El propósito u objetivo de la reunión son establecidos.
  4. Utiliza los primeros minutos para aclarar los puntos fundamentales.
  5. La agenda es la base de las discusiones.
  6. Un tema es discutido a la vez.
  7. Una persona habla a la vez.
  8. Todos los participantes tienen oportunidad de dar su opinión.
  9. Responsabilidades son asignadas para cada tarea.
  10. Se establecen fechas para cada tarea.
  11. Fecha, lugar y hora son establecidos para la siguiente reunión.
  12. La reunión termina en el tiempo establecido.
  13. Todos los participantes terminan la reunión sabiendo los siguientes pasos.

4, Después de la reunión

Asegúrate de dar un seguimiento después de la reunión. Envía un email oReunión eficazmemo con los puntos claves discutidos y las decisiones o tareas identificadas. Esto te ayudara a darle seguimiento a los temas pendientes y que todos los participantes tengan establecido quienes son responsables de cada tarea.

  1. Todos los participantes reciben un memo con los pasos a seguir en las siguientes 24 horas.
  2. Toda área o discusión que haya quedado pendiente se agenda para la siguiente reunión.
  3. Se delega y da seguimiento a todas las tareas asignadas.

The First-Ever UP Latam Summit United Community Leaders From 11 Different Countries

In the past 3 years, UP Global has expanded programming to reach entrepreneurs across the globe. With offices now in Brazil, Europe, Malaysia, and Mexico, UP strives to bring people together and help build thriving entrepreneurial communities.

Regional Summits are one way we bring programing, networking and community building to a growing area.

UP LATAM (Latin America)  just held it’s first Regional Summit in Manizales, Colombia. Over 55 entrepreneurs from 11 different countries attended with the desire to connect and share learnings. It was the first time in history that the UP Global Latam community gathered together to celebrate their entrepreneurial work.

In just two days, we were able to facilitate the unification of one of the most united, inspired, and genuine group of individuals. Everyone was eager to make a positive impact in their communities and influence the direction of Latin American entrepreneurs.

With an average growth of 84% in number of UP Global programs in the past 4 years, Colombia has increasingly become a country with huge potential for entrepreneurship. Organizing the UP Latam Summit in Colombia allowed the entrepreneurs in the area to expose their work, scope, focus and foremost, their impact across the region.

An important part of any Summit is making sure the right influential people are in on the action. We were able to attract some key Colombian players, such as entrepreneurial public agencies, bank institutions and other education & entrepreneurship institutions.

Google

Google Developers has become one of the principal supporters of the UP Latam Summit. We have partnered with Google Latin America to develop the campaign One Community – a joint effort to bring UP community leaders and Google’s technical communities together. This partnership will increase talent-diversity among Startup Weekend teams that will ultimately lead to stronger startups.

In this first pilot, Google has selected 15 different cities in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Chile, Guatemala & Uruguay.

The Summit was the perfect place to launch this initiative because both Google and UP Latam communities had the opportunity to meet in person, celebrating together, and form solid connections.

Where are the Winners of SWEDU now?

If you’ve participated in SWEDU you probably wondered what happened to all the teams that formed. Do they go on to have their company grow, quit their jobs, and take on their newly created project? Well yes. Some of them do.

Teams like VidCode, Plexx, and CultureConnect, who got their start at Startup Weekend NYCEDU, have grown beyond their Startup Weekend experience into full-fledged startup companies.

Recently, we followed up with Melissa Halfon, VP of VidCode, to see where they are now, six months after they won Startup Weekend EDU NYC 2014.

1. Is everyone who was originally on the team still helping to build Vidcode? Vidcode is truly a Startup Weekend EDU Cinderella story. We were five strangers who teamed up to solve one problem: getting more girls into technology. Since the weekend, our team has neither lost nor gained a member. Allie, Melissa, Leandra, Terry, and Ken are all still dedicated to Vidcode.

2. Did you guys quit your jobs to work full time on Vidcode? Allie & Melissa seamlessly continued working on Vidcode full time after Startup Weekend EDU. Allie was completing her masters at NYU ITP at the time and centered her thesis on Vidcode, devoting all her energy to it as a result. Melissa found herself without a full-time position (for reasons unrelated) and used the serendipitous timing to continue her dedication to the project. Our other team members have continued to contribute to Vidcode outside of their full-time gigs.

3. What stage would you say Vidcode is at, as a startup? We spent six months after Startup Weekend EDU in full build stage, validating and testing the product. This summer, we were one of the teams in Launch, 4.0 Schools’ accelerator, during which we launched Vidcode’s public beta and identified our target market. Now we’re in the first growth stage, building our user base and selling to early adopters.

4. Have you gone for funding outside of kickstarter? We are currently raising seed capital.

5. Do you think you would have built Vidcode outside of Startup Weekend given the opportunity? The most valuable asset that emerged from Startup Weekend EDU was the opportunity to form an incredible team of like-minded people. The problem is so important to each team member that we would’ve found a way to address it individually. But without the complimentary and talented team we assembled that weekend, the results wouldn’t have been as powerful.

6. Anything else about Vidcode and any of the problems you’ve faced as you have worked to build this product. The response to Vidcode in general, especially from girls, has been so overwhelmingly positive. Their reactions to what we’ve built make all the risks, unknown, and sleepless nights very much worth it. We know there’s a place in girls’ lives where Vidcode belongs and we’re determined to get it there.

7. Also, what is it that the Startup Weekend community can do to help? Spread the word. Our success at Startup Weekend validated that we have a compelling product. We’ve built it out, and now we want to get it into the hands of as many teens and schools as possible. Startup Weekend has a huge following of education leaders and teachers and we want them to know about Vidcode to implement in their own classrooms. UP Latam Summit – Emprendimiento que se fortalece en Latinoamérica.

La semana pasada, durante los días 23 y 24 de septiembre se llevó a cabo el UP Latam Summit en la ciudad de Manizales, en Colombia.

Más de 60 líderes de la comunidad de emprendimiento en Latinoamérica, que llegaron desde más de 15 países, se reunieron a compartir experiencias y participar, además, en el Startup Weekend MEGA Américas que sucedía por primera vez en Colombia, donde se dieron cita más de 350 participantes del país.

El emprendimiento en la región está creciendo a una tasa acelerada, y se empieza a sentir esa sed de aprendizaje y acción. Durante el evento hubo presencia también de entidades gubernamentales, privadas y universidades que quieren entender la perspectiva de nuestros líderes, y saber cómo pueden colaborar de una manera más complementaria.

A través de programas e iniciativas como el Fondo Emprender del SENA, INNpulsa Colombia, Emprende Cultura, Colombia Jóven Emprende y Apps.co, entre otras, el Gobierno Colombiano apoya proyectos de impulso a ideas de negocio, innovación, creación de empresas, PYMES y Startups, para contribuir a un país más moderno.

Durante el UP Latam Summit, los Líderes tuvieron sesiones de trabajo para mejorar el fomento al emprendimiento en los más de 15 países participantes, compartiendo información, casos de éxito y actividades que se pueden replicar en la región. El apoyo por parte de entidades en Latinoamérica existe, y es únicamente cuestión de identificar, conocer, entender, y aplicar a los fondos que tienen relevancia para cada startup o comunidad.

En México, por ejemplo, el Instituto Nacional del Emprendedor (INADEM) abre convocatorias de fondos para los emprendedores dos veces al año y organiza eventos para apoyar iniciativas del ecosistema emprendedor. Para Argentina, el Estado se hace presente para acompañar a todos aquellos que apuestan por el emprendimiento a través de programas como Capital Semilla, PACC Emprendedores, Innovación en Cadenas de Valor, Empresas Madrinas y Aprendiendo a Emprender. En Chile, Brasil y Perú existen los programas Startup Chile, Startup Perú y Startup Brasil respectivamente, los cuales cuentan con esquemas innovadores para desarrollar ecosistemas de emprendimiento de alto impacto en sus respectivos países, así como apoyos muy interesantes para las startups.

Reunion Party Startup Weekend Groningen

Three years, one room

Friday evening. Groningen. The bar in Het Kasteel starts to fill up with people. Not just random people, but with former Startup Weekend Groningen attendees.

From the last three years all the attendees were invited for a reunion in former Startup Weekend venue Het Kasteel on the 20th of June. Here, everybody could catch up again with old team members, attendees, coaches, volunteers and the facilitator. While two team members welcomed the Startup Weekenders down stairs in the main entrance with a selfie challenge, others were waiting upstairs in the bar to get the party started. The atmosphere was good. Even Hennie, the owner of Het Kasteel, said it was immediately ‘gezellig’. Drinks were flowing and the chatting became louder and louder.

After a lot of catching up everybody was invited to the main room for a small program from the Startup Weekend team. Startup Weekend facilitator Nick Stevens took to the stage and welcomed all of the attendees with a small trip through memory lane, showing all the teams who participated in the past. Then  the movie was shown from last years event. Two former teams, Bartune (2011) and Quoins (2013), were also invited to talk about their Startup Weekend experience and the adventures they had after Startup Weekend. It was nice to hear they are still up and running.

After the presentations the new Startup Weekend team introduced themselves and instigated a game in order to win a ticket for the next event in Groningen. Awesome. The rules were simple: everybody gets a piece of paper with half a quote on it. The objective: find the other half. The first two people who find each other, then find and high five Startup Weekend team member Jos, are the winners! Easy as pie. The start sign was given and after a lot of shouting, pushing and elbowing the winning couple got to Jos and high fived him. Congratulations, the first two attendees of Startup Weekend Groningen 2014!

Everybody settled down again and returned to the bar for some more drinks. The reunion party went on for quite some time and even ended up in the city bars. Well done. The Startup Weekend Team wants to thank everybody who made this evening possible and we hope to see you at the next event!
