Startup Weekend, the game, was made by Slouch Couch – an HTML5 video game studio company born out of Startup Weekend Omaha. As explained by Miles Matthias, one of the founding team members, “Going into Startup Weekend Omaha, none of us had any experience making games. We were simply five developers and one designer who wanted to learn a new skill and have some fun. In 54 hours, we learned how to build a game, test it, play it with a controller for theSunday night demo, and then run it on our website.”
He continues, “We chose to make a game about Startup Weekend because we knew it would be a fun thing to do. Our goal wasn’t necessarily to win the pitch competition – but to really have fun learning a new skill and getting wrapped up in the Startup Weekend fun. Making a game about our experience and getting to show the logos of some of the other teams from that weekend in our game was a great way for us to do that. We even sold a couple of the ad spaces to outside groups for $5 – making a whopping $10 in revenue!”
The Slouch Couch team is comprised of Dave Homan (the original pitcher at SW Omaha, @mrlasertron), Nick Nisi (@nicknisi), Gabe Kangas (@gabek), Dwayne Chun (@manager1228), Heath Gerlock (@heathgerlock), and Miles Matthias (@miles_matthias). The guys are continuing to make games together and already have clients lining up! They’ve also had several requests for t-shirts with the Slouch Couch logo and are selling those as well.
