Joel writes and speaks extensively on the future of media for the Diffusion Group, an research analyst and strategy consulting organization whose clients include Comcast, Disney, Intel, Roku and Sharp Labs. In addition, Joel serves as strategic advisor to numerous technology companies and startups. Recent engagements (last 12 months) include DivX LLC (video streaming, acquired by NeuLion, Inc.), Feniks, Inc. (smart coffee kiosks), 640 Labs, Inc. (big data for agriculture, acquired by the Climate Corporation) and Snaptracs, Inc. (wireless pet tracking, acquired by Whistle Labs, Inc.). Previously, Joel was a member of the Board of Directors of IQ Engines (cloud based image recognition acquired by Yahoo, Inc.). Joel is an investor in Founders’ Co-op and has also done independent angel investments including Balance Financial (cloud-based financial planning sold to TaxAct).

Prior to this role, Joel was a founder as well as SVP of Strategy & General Counsel at San Diego-based PacketVideo Corporation, a pioneer in streaming video to mobile phones (acquired by NTT DoCoMo of Japan). Joel began his career at the Palo Alto, CA office of Cooley LLP as a corporate and intellectual property attorney.

Joel has a BA from St. Olaf College and a JD from Duke University Law School. Joel is fluent in Spanish and has mentored with both Tech Stars and the Founder Institute, where he was recognized as a top mentor in the program.
