Prior to Pipeline, Joel built and led the seed program at Draper Associates, a seed stage venture firm in Menlo Park, CA. Joel also served as technology director for the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, advising senators on technology legislation and policy. Joel co-founded an IT consulting startup, Iceware Technologies, where he specialized in wireless application infrastructure.
Joel has sourced and led over 50 venture investments leading to more than a dozen exits including Socialcam (ADSK), Rentjuice (Z), Cruise (GM), Twitch (AMZN), Alohar (BABA), iSocket (RUBI), and ViVu (PLCM).
Joel has an MBA from Tulane University’s Freeman School of Business, and a BA from the University of Puget Sound where he was Captain of the NCAA Alpine Ski Team. Joel also studied at the US Naval War College in Washington, DC, where he holds a Certificate in Joint Maritime Operations.
