For many of us, the hunt for the perfect pair of shoes feels like a losing battle. We settle for "good enough," dealing with pinched toes or slipping heels because we assume our feet are just difficult. But according to Maeve Wang, the founder of IAMBIC (Techstars 2024), the problem isn't your feet, it’s the industry.
The journey of IAMBIC started with a relatable personal frustration. As Maeve puts it:
"I really started off with what I thought was a personal problem, and that is finding shoes that fit. And to be clear, I do not have weird feet. I just have a really tough combination of really common traits. I discovered that I'm not the only person who struggles with this."
The data backs her up. Current manufacturing standards are surprisingly narrow, leaving the majority of the population behind. Maeve points out a startling reality: "Today, shoes are only made to fit about 33% of people super well."
IAMBIC wasn't always a footwear brand. Initially, the company aimed to solve the "fit problem" through software, a smartphone-based scanner designed to help retailers reduce their 40% online return exchange rate. However, after receiving a government grant and diving into the work, the team hit a wall.
"It totally failed," Maeve admits candidly. But that failure led to a massive realization. The team discovered that footwear fit isn't just a data matching issue; it is "fundamentally a design and manufacturing flaw."
To truly solve the problem, they had to stop trying to fix other people's shoes and start making their own. This led to a "go big or go home" pivot from software to a full-scale footwear brand, building a supply chain that loops data into every single step of the process.
The pivot was terrifying, especially for a team that didn't initially have branding or marketing in their DNA. But the risk paid off. By the time IAMBIC joined Techstars in 2024, they were already gaining massive momentum:
Named a TIME Best Invention of the Year.
Their first shoe sold out within two weeks with zero paid advertising.
Through the Techstars network, they secured partnerships that led to a high-profile collection launch during the Miami F1 Grand Prix.
Building a "generation-defining brand" isn't a solo mission. Maeve credits much of her success to the ecosystem of founders and mentors around her.
"I really call myself the founder's founder. There's nothing like guidance that comes from my fellow founder, especially one who's also in it or maybe just a few steps ahead of me. So community is everything."
By combining AI-driven precision with a commitment to quality, IAMBIC is doing more than just selling sneakers; they are making "tailored, precision fit shoes accessible at scale."
