Building a Startup in 54 Hours
Startup Weekends are a high-energy three-day experience designed to help participants transform ideas into real startup ventures and step directly into the startup world — no prior experience required. Over the course of the weekend, participants will move through an accelerated startup-building process and gain direct exposure to the realities of entrepreneurship while building meaningful relationships with collaborators, mentors, and future founders.
- Friday Evening: Participants pitch ideas, vote on concepts, and form teams around the most promising opportunities.
- Saturday: Teams work alongside mentors and experienced operators to validate ideas, conduct customer discovery, build prototypes, refine business models, and attend startup-focused workshops.
- Sunday: Teams finalize their presentations and pitch their ventures to a panel of judges during the closing competition.
This first edition of the Techstars Startup Weekend University of Kansas is sector-agnostic and will bring together participants from across the Jayhawk community, including students, alumni, faculty, staff, developers, designers, researchers, creatives, marketers, and aspiring founders, to collaborate on ideas spanning industries such as AI, HealthTech, ClimateTech, FinTech, EdTech, consumer products, social impact, and other emerging technologies.
Whether participants arrive with a startup idea, a side project, or simply curiosity about entrepreneurship, the Startup Weekend will offer an accessible and collaborative environment to explore, experiment, and connect with the next generation of innovators.
"One of the beauties of championing events like these in universities like the University of Kansas is the incredible mix of talent already here — students, researchers, creatives, engineers, and builders all bringing different perspectives. Entrepreneurship becomes powerful when those worlds collide, and that’s exactly the kind of collaboration and creativity this weekend is designed to spark." - Glory Eromosele, Program Manager
"At KU, we believe entrepreneurship is best learned through experience. Startup Weekend gives the broader KU community an opportunity to test ideas, build solutions, and collaborate across disciplines and experience levels. It’s a powerful way for participants to build confidence, develop new skills, and explore pathways to future ventures and careers." - Jide Wintoki, Dean of the KU School of Business
