The Leader Trap: Lots of Vision — No Collaboration

Great ecosystems are made up of many leaders who are both driven by their vision and collaborative in applying their vision.

I've met a lot of community leaders who can see the future clearly. The passion they have for this vision is intoxicating. They know exactly what the community should look like in five years. They can describe it in detail, down to the coffee shop where the next big idea gets scribbled on a napkin.
That clarity is a gift. It's also a trap. A huge trap that I fell into myself years ago.
Because the moment your vision gets too attached to you, you no longer need a team. You just need hands. People who nod, execute, and don't slow you down with questions. Let’s be clear about this — it feels good to be in that position. However, that position has a limited lifespan.
I've been that guy. Convinced I was right, moving fast, running slightly ahead of everyone else in the room. It works for a while. Then you turn around one day, and nobody's actually with you anymore. They're just following, which isn't the same thing.
Here's the balance I had to figure out the hard way. Be a leader but not the only leader. Get people excited but leave room for them to lead.
Passion says "this needs to happen." Collaboration says "let's figure out how, together." Both are true at once, and holding both can be uncomfortable. You have to care enough to push and care enough to listen, in the same breath. Balance.
It's the same tension as urgency and patience. Urgency says do something today. Patience says the real win is years out, and today is just one brick. Leaders who rely solely on urgency burn out their teams. Leaders who only have patience never build anything real. You need both running at the same time, which can feel a little crazy if you've never tried it.
The trick I've found starts with the realization that you cannot be the only leader. Great ecosystems are made up of many leaders who are both driven by their vision and collaborative in applying their vision. Balance.
The next trick is finding ways to collaborate with others’ visions. This role is the complete opposite of your vision. You are now the collaborator, not the visionary. Balance.
The founders and community builders I trust most aren't the ones with the boldest vision or the most collaborative process. They're the ones who can hold both without letting either completely dominate their practice.
Vision gets you started. Passion encourages others to follow. Patience enables multiple roles. Collaboration is what makes sure you're not standing alone at the finish line, wondering where everyone went.
